Bosnia and Herzegovina issued this piece in 1996 while the country was barely a year removed from the Dayton Agreement. The Sarajevo Olympics of 1984 had been the last moment of genuine international prestige for the region, which makes the choice to issue a 1996 Atlanta Games commemorative — under a newly reconstituted state still administering a shattered economy — a politically charged act of nation-building currency. The Convertible Mark wouldn't even exist until 1998; the dinar itself was on borrowed time.

Low mintage is typical of Bosnian commemorative gold from this transitional period, most of which was struck for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
