Bosnia and Herzegovina issued this coin in 1993 while the country was actively at war — the siege of Sarajevo was well into its second year, and the government operated under extraordinary conditions. The choice of downhill skiing as a subject is a direct reference to the 1984 Winter Olympics held in Sarajevo, the last major international event the city had hosted before the conflict. By 1993, the Mount Igman and Bjelašnica venues from those Games had become military positions.
KM#10 is part of a small Olympic-themed gold series issued primarily for foreign collectors, with negligible domestic circulation given the wartime economy.
