Bosnia's 1994 gold issues were produced in the middle of an active war — the siege of Sarajevo was in its third year, and the country was operating without a stable currency infrastructure. The National Bank was issuing these collector pieces largely for hard-currency revenue abroad while the domestic economy ran on humanitarian aid and black-market deutschmarks.
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) population in the Dinaric Alps was, at the time, one of the healthiest in Europe — an odd subject for a nation in the middle of an existential conflict, though wildlife series were reliable sellers on the international numismatic market.
