Brazil's shift to the cruzeiro novo in 1967 — lopping three zeros off the old cruzeiro — makes high-denomination notes like this one interesting relics of the inflationary spiral that preceded the reform. The 10,000 cruzeiro face value, enormous by the standards of the early 1960s, had become merely functional by the time this note entered circulation.
The American Bank Note Company contract for this series predates the monetary reform by less than a year, suggesting the plates were commissioned with little expectation they would circulate long. P#182B distinguishes the first print from subsequent issues by subtle signature and plate variations.
