Issued in the final year of the first Sandinista government, just months before the FSLN's unexpected electoral defeat to Violeta Chamorro in February 1990. Nicaragua's economy was in ruins — a decade of contra war, U.S. trade embargo, and hyperinflation had reduced the córdoba to near worthlessness. The 10,000-córdoba face value, staggering by any earlier Nicaraguan standard, reflects exactly that collapse.
The Discovery of America series was a pan-Latin American commemorative wave ahead of the 1992 Quincentenary. Nicaragua's entry was struck in .999 silver at a time when the country could barely finance basic imports.
