Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Banco Central de Costa Rica, founded in 1950 — which makes 1997 the actual forty-seventh year of operation, a minor but persistent awkwardness in the commemorative framing that collectors occasionally note. The BCCR had been working to suppress the rampant inflation of the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period when 10,000 colones represented serious purchasing power; by 1997 that position had eroded considerably.
Oberthur's Rennes facility handled production. Only watermark security on cotton paper for a denomination of this size is notably restrained by late-1990s standards.
