The Vereinigung von Banken und Bankiers in Rheinland und Westfalen was a regional banking association based in Cologne that, like hundreds of German commercial bodies in 1923, was compelled to issue its own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to keep payrolls moving. By the time notes at this denomination were printed, the Reichsbank's own presses were struggling to keep pace with hyperinflation that was doubling prices roughly every few days. A 10-million-Mark note was not a large sum for long.
The watermark is notable for a private issuer of this type — many comparable association notes from the same period were printed on plain stock with no security feature whatsoever.
