Bochumer Verein für Bergbau und Gußstahlfabrikation was one of the Ruhr's dominant integrated steel and mining conglomerates, and like dozens of major German industrial firms in 1923, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — when the Reichsmark collapsed so completely that workers could not be paid in anything of stable value. The 10-million-Mark denomination places this note squarely in the hyperinflation peak, when wages had to be paid daily to prevent purchasing power from evaporating between morning and afternoon.

Industrial Notgeld of this type was typically redeemable against wages or company store credit rather than functioning as general-circulation currency. The firm's own printing facilities in Bochum handled production.
