Glauchau's 10-million Mark note belongs to the hyperinflation peak of summer–autumn 1923, when German municipalities were legally permitted — and practically compelled — to issue their own emergency currency, Notgeld, to compensate for the Reichsbank's inability to supply denominations keeping pace with daily price increases. The Stadtrat's authorization to print at this level reflects how completely the central monetary framework had collapsed: a 10-million Mark note was grocery money.

Bürgermeister Dr. Schimmel's signature gives this a degree of civic accountability unusual among the smaller Saxon issuers. The second signatory, abbreviated "Br.," remains unconfirmed by name across most reference sources.
