One of hundreds of Notgeld issues from the hyperinflation summer of 1923, this Zittau district note was printed locally by Gebrüder Güttler — a practical necessity when central supply of currency collapsed entirely and municipal authorities were legally empowered to issue their own emergency paper. The Bezirksverband der Amtshauptmannschaft und Stadt Zittau covered the administrative district surrounding the city, and the joint issuing authority between town and rural district was a common Saxon arrangement.
A 10-million mark denomination that would have been unremarkable by late August 1923, when the Reichsbank's own presses couldn't keep pace with depreciation. Within weeks of any such note's issue date, its face value was effectively obsolete.
