Bielefeld's savings bank was among the most prolific issuers of notgeld during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, and the city became genuinely notable in emergency currency circles — not least because some of its issues were printed on unconventional materials including linen and leather, a practical response to paper shortages and an attempt to produce notes with longer service lives than pulp could offer. This particular paper issue came from E. Gundlach, a local commercial printer pressed into monetary service like dozens of regional firms that year.

By the time 10-million-mark denominations were routine, the Reichsbank had effectively lost control of the money supply to municipal and corporate issuers. Stabilization came in November 1923 with the introduction of the Rentenmark, after which all notgeld was demonetized.
