One of thousands of Notgeld issues churned out by German local authorities during the hyperinflation of 1923, this Bezirksverband Chemnitz note reflects the complete breakdown of central monetary supply in mid-year — by August 1923, the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand, and district councils, municipalities, and even private firms were authorized to fill the gap. The Amtshauptmannschaft Chemnitz, a Saxon administrative district, was one of countless such bodies that stepped in.

At 10 million Mark, this denomination was already obsolete within weeks of issue. The Reichsbank's stabilization via the Rentenmark in November 1923 rendered all such Notgeld worthless overnight.
