Schweinfurt's 10-million Mark notgeld was printed by H. Stürtz AG in Würzburg — a university press better known for academic and ecclesiastical work that, like dozens of regional printers in 1923, found itself suddenly in the emergency currency business. By the time notes at this denomination were being issued by municipal authorities, the Reichsmark's collapse was advancing so rapidly that 10 million was barely functional tender; some communities were already preparing hundred-million and billion-mark issues within weeks of signing off on these sheets.
Bürgermeister Merkle's signature appears as the sole authorizing signatory — municipal notgeld of this period required local executive sign-off to carry legal validity within the issuing district.
