Turkey's 10,000,000 lira denomination reflects the catastrophic inflation that plagued the country through the 1980s and 1990s, a period during which the lira lost roughly 99.9% of its value. By 2001, the year this piece was struck, a single US dollar exchanged for approximately 1.4 million lira. The currency was eventually redenominated in 2005, with one new Turkish lira replacing 1,000,000 of the old — effectively erasing six zeros from the monetary system by decree.
This issue precedes that redenomination by four years, making pieces like this among the last silver commemoratives struck under the inflated numbering scheme.
