Weimar's municipal and district treasury issued this 10-billion-Mark note in the autumn of 1923, at the absolute peak of Reichsmark hyperinflation — the point at which the currency had become so debased that even rural district administrations were forced into emergency money printing simply to meet payroll. The Weimar issuing authority is a notable one: the same city that gave its name to the Republic was scrambling, like hundreds of German municipalities, to produce Notgeld denominated in figures that would have been unimaginable three years earlier.
The watermarked paper suggests use of pre-existing stock, likely sourced from a regional printer working through a backlog of orders from dozens of simultaneous municipal clients.
