The denomination 'Zehn Milliarden Mark' is set in large Gothic blackletter script at centre, above a block of legal text in smaller Roman type. A right-hand stub carries the denomination repeated vertically in Gothic script. At lower centre, a circular official seal of the Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt bearing an eagle is flanked by the issue date at left and the issuing authority's designation at right, with a manuscript signature below. |

Railway emergency money — Notgeld issued by a regional rail directorate rather than a financial institution. The Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt was one of several regional divisions of the Deutsche Reichsbahn authorized to issue their own emergency currency during the hyperinflationary peak of late 1923, when the central money supply collapsed faster than Berlin could print replacements. Ten billion marks was not an unusually large denomination for that autumn; by November 1923, a single loaf of bread in Germany cost multiples of this figure.
A. Stenger was a local Erfurt printer, not a specialist security printer, which is consistent with the improvised nature of Notgeld production at this stage.
