HANOMAG — the locomotive and later automobile manufacturer based in Linden — was among the thousands of German industrial firms authorized to issue notgeld during the hyperinflation peak of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet wage demands. A company paying hundreds of workers in cash had no practical alternative. These factory-issued billions were typically redeemable only at the issuing firm's pay office, which kept circulation geographically tight and redemption periods brutally short.
The ten-billion denomination places this note squarely in the October–November 1923 window, when denominations escalated almost weekly.
