The Bayerische Staatsbank was one of several German state and private banks authorized to issue emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank alone could not produce notes fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time ten-billion-mark denominations were necessary, the inflation was advancing so rapidly that notes were often obsolescent within days of printing — workers famously demanded to be paid twice daily so wages could be spent before losing further value.
Bavaria's state bank issues from this period are sometimes overlooked in favor of Reichsbank material, but they circulated alongside reichsmark issues on equal footing under emergency authorization.
