Comments

Regierungsbezirk Trier and the small Prussian enclave of Provinz Birkenfeld issued this note jointly during the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when regional and municipal authorities across Germany were legally empowered to produce their own Notgeld to fill a void the Reichsbank could no longer bridge. By October of that year, ten billion marks would not have purchased a loaf of bread in most German cities.

Schaar & Dathe, a Trier printing firm, handled much of the emergency currency production for the southwestern Rhineland region. The Trier-Birkenfeld pairing was administratively convenient but geographically awkward — Birkenfeld was a non-contiguous Prussian territory surrounded by non-Prussian land.
