Buer was an independent industrial city in the Ruhr — absorbed into Gelsenkirchen only in 1928 — and like hundreds of German municipalities in late 1923, the Stadtkasse issued its own emergency currency when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. By the time notes at this denomination were being struck, the mark was losing value within hours of issue, which forced local authorities to produce and distribute currency at a pace that made quality control essentially impossible.
Ten trillion marks. At the peak of the collapse, that bought roughly a loaf of bread.
