| Obverse description | Central field bears the rampant Hessian lion passant within a plain oval cartouche surmounted by a large electoral crown. The surrounding legend HESSEN DARMST runs clockwise along the periphery, separated from the inner cartouche by a raised circular border. The coin's rim is defined by a fine beaded or milled edge. The design reflects the late-Baroque heraldic style typical of small German princely states in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. |
