The "Ears of Grain" zloty design of 1928 emerged from Poland's post-partition scramble to build a coherent national coinage after over a century without a sovereign mint. Trial strikes in nickel were produced to evaluate the design and planchet specifications before the decision was made to issue the circulation type in silver. Most such pattern pieces from this period were struck in very limited numbers for ministerial approval and were never intended to leave official hands.
