Additional information

Pietrino Del Ponte held the Grand Mastership for barely fourteen months before his death in 1535, making his coinage among the scarcest of any Hospitaller ruler. The zecchino denomination was the Order's answer to the Venetian ducat — same weight, same fineness, same commercial credibility across Mediterranean trading ports. Rhodes had fallen to Suleiman in 1522, and the Order was still newly installed on Malta when these were struck, operating a mint on an island Charles V had granted them almost as an afterthought.
