Reverse description The reverse presents a frontal standing figure of Christ in Majesty (Christus benedicens), nimbed with a cruciform halo, robed in flowing drapery, raising the right hand in blessing and holding the Gospels in the left hand. The figure is set within an oval mandorla composed of alternating stars and pellets, lending the design a strongly Byzantine hieratic character consistent with the long numismatic tradition of the Venetian ducat. The surrounding Latin legend, reading ·SIT·T·XPE·DAT·Q·TV·REGIS·ISTE·DVCA·, is an invocatory inscription meaning 'May this duchy be given to thee, O Christ, whom thou rulest,' a formula maintained virtually unchanged on Venetian gold coinage from the medieval period onward.
