正面描述 St. Mark, nimbed and robed, stands at left facing the kneeling Doge, presenting him with a vexillum staff surmounted by a cross; the word DVX appears vertically between the two figures in the field. The Doge kneels in profile at right in ducal robes, receiving the standard in an act of investiture. The Latin legend identifying the Doge runs along the outer border of the coin.

附加信息

Marcantonio Giustinian served as Doge from 1684 to 1688 during the War of the Holy League, when Venice was actively campaigning against the Ottomans in the Morea. Francesco Morosini's forces captured Athens in 1687 — accidentally detonating the Parthenon in the process — while these zecchini were being struck. The Venetian ducat's gold purity had been maintained at .999 fine essentially without interruption since the thirteenth century, a monetary discipline that made it the preferred trade coin of the eastern Mediterranean for over five hundred years.
