Marcantonio Giustinian served as Doge from 1684 to 1688 during the War of the Holy League, when Venice was actively campaigning against the Ottomans in the Morea. Francesco Morosini's forces captured Athens in 1687 — accidentally detonating the Parthenon in the process — while these zecchini were being struck. The Venetian ducat's gold purity had been maintained at .999 fine essentially without interruption since the thirteenth century, a monetary discipline that made it the preferred trade coin of the eastern Mediterranean for over five hundred years.
