| Beschrijving voorzijde | Saint Mark, the patron of Venice, stands in full length at left, robed and nimbed, presenting a staff surmounted by a cross to the kneeling Doge at right, who receives it with both hands in a gesture of investiture. The inscription DVX appears vertically between the two figures. The peripheral legend S·M·VENET LVDOV·MANIN DVX runs around the coin in Latin, identifying the issuing authority and the Doge Lodovico Manin. The composition follows the centuries-old Venetian zecchino tradition, rendered in fine medieval Gothic style typical of the Republic's gold coinage. |
