His right hand is raised in benediction while his left holds the Gospels. The two-line peripheral legend, divided across the field, reads SIT·T·XPE·DAT·Q·TV / REGIS·ISTE·DVCA, a traditional Latin invocation meaning 'May this duchy which You rule be given to You, O Christ,' a formula employed on Venetian zecchini since the medieval period. The overall design reflects the enduring Byzantine-influenced iconographic convention characteristic of Venetian gold ducats. |
