Obverse description Standing figure of Saint John the Baptist in nimbus, robed in flowing garments and holding a long cross-staff in his left hand, facing right toward the Grand Master. To his right stands the kneeling figure of Grand Master Juan de Homedes in armour and Grand Magisterial robes, receiving a banner or standard from the saint. The composition closely follows the Venetian zecchino type, with the two figures flanking a central pole. The date 1539 appears in the lower exergue, and the legend is divided between the left and right fields.

Reverse description Full-length frontal figure of the Virgin Mary, nimbed and standing on a small mound, with arms slightly extended and holding the Christ Child before her. The figure is rendered in high relief in the hammered style, surrounded by a field of six six-pointed stars arranged in an arc. A beaded inner border frames the central device, and the legend runs continuously around the periphery in two segments separated by stops, recalling Marian devotional iconography standard to the Order of St. John's gold coinage.
