Issued following the relocation of the Republic of China government to Taiwan in 1949, this coin honors Sun Yat-sen as founding father of the ROC — a political claim the exiled Nationalist government carried with particular urgency, insisting it remained the legitimate Chinese state. The hefty copper-nickel plated steel construction was a cost compromise adopted as Taiwan's postwar economy stabilized through the 1950s and early 1960s.
