Yuan Shikai's consolidation of power in 1912 produced a flurry of pattern coinage as the nascent Republic scrambled to establish a national monetary identity distinct from the Qing issues still in circulation. This piece is one of several competing designs produced that year before the iconic "Fatman" dollar type was standardized. Kann B54 is among the scarcer of these trials — most were never submitted for full production approval, surviving only in small numbers distributed among officials or retained by mint workers.
The Shanghai Mint handled much of this experimental striking. Auction appearances of this specific reference remain infrequent.
