Yuan Shikai declared himself the Hongxian Emperor in December 1915, and these coins were struck in anticipation of a dynasty that collapsed before it properly began. Widespread military opposition and the defection of his own generals forced him to abdicate the imperial title in March 1916 after just 83 days. Yuan died in June of that year, leaving the coins without a regime to back them.
Most examples were never released into circulation, which accounts for the high survival rate in near-mint condition. The L&M#942 reference distinguishes this from the related patterns and presentation strikes that were also prepared for the occasion.
