The Pei Yang Arsenal Mint at Tianjin was established using imported British machinery in the 1880s, making it one of the first provincial mints in China capable of producing machine-struck coinage to a consistent standard. These dollars were struck under the authority of Yuan Shikai during his tenure as Governor-General of Zhili, a fact that carries some irony given his later role in dismantling the Qing dynasty entirely. Production ran across multiple years with subtle die variations, and examples from the earlier strikes tend to show sharper detail before the working dies began to deteriorate.
