Additional information

Issued to mark China's participation in the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics — the first Winter Games the People's Republic had entered since its founding. China sent a delegation of 28 athletes that year, competing across multiple disciplines but winning no medals. The commemorative series these coins belong to was among the earliest PRC issues explicitly targeting the international collector market, a deliberate shift in policy as China began opening economically following the reforms of 1978.
