The Farmers Bank of Northwest Shansi was one of several regional banks operating under Nationalist Chinese authority during the Second Sino-Japanese War, issuing currency to maintain local economic function in areas under constant military pressure. Northwest Shansi — Shaanxi and the surrounding region — was contested territory throughout this period, and the banks operating there functioned partly as instruments of wartime fiscal control.

P#S3293 carries the "S" prefix in the Pick catalogue, placing it among the specialized and regional Chinese issues — a category where provenance documentation is frequently sparse and surviving quantities are difficult to verify independently.
