The Hunan-West Hupeh Special Branch was one of several regional soviet banking organs operating under the Chinese Soviet Republic's financial apparatus in the early 1930s, each issuing its own notes with limited interoperability. This branch served the revolutionary base areas straddling the Hunan-Hubei border — territory under the Fourth Army Corps, which had been operating independently of the Jiangxi central soviet since the late 1920s.
Survival rates for notes from these peripheral soviet branches are extremely low. Kuomintang suppression campaigns through 1931–1934 meant that captured currency was routinely destroyed, and communist forces themselves burned remaining stocks during retreats to prevent enemy use.
