The Central Bank of China's 1936 series was printed by Waterlow & Sons in London at a moment when the Nationalist government was still consolidating its monetary authority following the landmark fabi currency reform of November 1935, which severed the yuan from silver and placed note issuance firmly under four government-designated banks. This note is a direct product of that reorganization — the Central Bank had only recently been restructured as the apex institution of the new system.
Waterlow's involvement was routine for Chinese government printing of this period, though the relationship would be complicated by the Japanese occupation beginning in 1937, which disrupted distribution of pre-war stocks and created parallel circulation of occupation currency alongside legitimate Nationalist issues.
