Additional information

Kweichow's 1949 provincial dollar was struck in the final months before the Communist takeover rendered all Nationalist-affiliated coinage obsolete. The province had a long history of issuing idiosyncratic silver dollars — the 1928 "Auto Dollar," celebrating the first motor road into Guizhou, is the more famous example — and this bamboo issue follows that tradition of locally-driven coinage decisions made far from Nanjing's oversight.

Surviving examples vary considerably in surface quality, attributable to the chaotic minting conditions of that final year rather than any documented die problem. Most reached circulation only briefly before silver hoarding accelerated as Nationalist control collapsed.
