To the left of the skier appears the official emblem of the XIII Winter Olympic Games (Lake Placid 1980), a bold geometric 'L' shape. China's 1980 Olympic commemorative program was the country's first serious foray into modern collector coinage, timed to coincide with the Lake Placid Winter Games and marking a broader reopening to international numismatic markets after decades of isolation. The piedfort format — double the standard planchet thickness — was almost certainly adopted to signal prestige to foreign buyers rather than domestic collectors, who had little access to such issues at the time.
KM#P7 is among the scarcer pieces in the series. Distribution ran primarily through foreign currency channels and overseas coin dealers.
