The Xuantong pattern dollars of 1911 were prepared in the final months of a dynasty already collapsing beneath its own contradictions — the Wuchang Uprising began in October of that year, and by February 1912 the Xuantong Emperor had abdicated. These pieces never entered circulation. The long-whiskered dragon variant is one of several competing designs struck as China's reformist officials debated a unified national coinage that the revolution would ultimately prevent anyone from issuing.
The L&M#28 reference places this among a tightly documented handful of pattern types from the Tientsin Mint. Survivors exist in small numbers across a few major collections.
