Obverse description Facing bust of Zhang Zuolin in high relief, depicted in full military uniform with elaborately engraved epaulettes and an upright collar adorned with foliate ornament. A small rectangular flag device appears to the right of the portrait in the field. The six-character Chinese legend 海陸軍大元帥 (Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy) arcs across the upper field, flanked by a beaded inner border and a reeded rim. The engraving, attributed to Lu Chuan-Fang, exhibits a strongly modelled, three-dimensional portrait style characteristic of Republican-era Chinese pattern coinage.
