The "Yeni" (New) Lira was introduced on January 1, 2005, after Turkey's Central Bank redenominated the currency at a rate of 1,000,000 old Lira to 1 Yeni Lira — one of the largest redenominations in monetary history, erasing six zeros accumulated through decades of chronic inflation that had peaked in the early 2000s. The "Yeni" prefix was always intended as temporary. By 2009 it was dropped, and the coin transitioned back to simply "Lira," giving this four-year window its own distinct identity in Turkish numismatic history.
