| Obverse lettering | 年 八 治 明 · 本 日 大 · 416 · ONE YEN · 900 · (Translation: Great Japan · Year 8 of Meiji · 416 · One yen · 900 ·) |
| Reverse description | The central field bears the denomination inscribed vertically in kanji characters reading 一圓 (One Yen). Flanking the denomination on either side are ornate sprays consisting of paulownia branches with heart-shaped leaves and chrysanthemum flowers. A chrysanthemum mon, serving as the imperial seal of the Emperor of Japan, is prominently positioned at the top of the design. The composition is symmetrical and highly decorative, reflecting the Meiji-era fusion of traditional Japanese artistic motifs with Western minting technology. The whole is surrounded by a toothed outer border. |
