Obverse description Black print on pink and yellow underprint. The Imperial chrysanthemum crest occupies the upper centre, flanked by an onagadori (long-tailed cock) vignette at left. A large numeral 1, partially encircled by foliate and floral ornaments, appears at centre-right, with a red seal at lower left and corner numerals 1 in each angle. A band of eleven Japanese characters runs across the top of the note.

Reverse description Brown print on a fine guilloche underprint. At left, the Chinese characters 壹圓 (one yen) are arranged vertically within an ornate frame. A block of official Kanji script occupying the centre carries the anti-counterfeiting warning text, and the Western denomination 1 YEN appears in large numerals at the right.
