The Ho Chi Minh Trail notes were a parallel currency issued specifically for use along the supply corridor running through Laos and Cambodia — a logistical network, not a geographic address. They circulated outside the formal banking system, used by North Vietnamese Army personnel and support units moving men and materiel south, insulating the main Democratic Republic of Vietnam currency from the economic pressures of wartime supply operations.
The third issue dates from the period of heaviest American bombing of the Trail under Operation Linebacker, when physical movement of currency was itself a military risk.
