| 裏面の説明 | Standing frontal figure of Saint Philip (São Filipe), depicted in bishop's robes and holding a patriarchal cross, occupying the full height of the field. The saint's name is divided by the figure, with the initial 'S' to the left and 'F' to the right. The date '1640' appears in the lower field below the figure, and the whole is enclosed within a beaded border. |

Filipe III of Portugal — Felipe IV of Spain — was deep into the disastrous final years of Iberian Union rule when this piece was struck at Goa. The separation came in December 1640, when the Duke of Braganza seized the Portuguese throne as João IV, ending sixty years of Spanish Habsburg control. Coinage struck at Goa during this transitional window, still in Filipe's name, circulated into a colony that had already politically changed hands — making the precise dating of individual specimens a genuinely contested matter among specialists.
