Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting the Paektu-san mountain landscape with a hydroelectric dam, rice sheaves framing the shield on either side, and a five-pointed star above radiating sunbeams. The arms are flanked at the base by decorative sprigs. The denomination '1 원' (1 Won) appears in the lower field in Korean script. The circular legend in Korean script reading '조선민주주의인민공화국' (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) surrounds the design along the periphery.

Reverse description A detailed view of the reconstructed Tomb of King Tongmyong (Dongmyong), founder of the Goguryeo kingdom, rendered in fine relief against a polished field. The tomb is depicted as a large earthen burial mound set upon a rectangular stone-terraced base, flanked by stone statues and pine trees, with stylized clouds in the background. The English legend 'TOMB OF KING TONGMYONG' arcs along the upper periphery. Below the central design, the Korean inscription '동명왕릉' (Tomb of King Dongmyong) appears above '2300여년전' (over 2300 years ago), with the Juche calendar date and Gregorian equivalent 'Juche 91 (2002)' in the lower exergue.
