Daeseong Fortress, built during the Goguryeo kingdom and dating to roughly the 5th–7th centuries AD, sits on the outskirts of Pyongyang and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Capital Cities and Tombs of Ancient Koguryo Kingdom inscription — though that designation came in 2004, three years after this coin was struck. North Korean commemorative aluminium issues from this period were produced primarily for the foreign collector market rather than domestic circulation, a practice the DPRK's state mint pursued aggressively through the 1990s and 2000s to generate hard currency.
