Issued in 1987 for foreign visitors to North Korea, this coin was part of a parallel currency system designed to segregate tourist spending from the domestic economy. The DPRK maintained separate won denominations for capitalist-country visitors versus socialist-country visitors — this piece falls into the latter category, identifiable by the absence of a star on the reverse.
These coins rarely left the country through legitimate channels.
