Issued the same year North Korea formalized its "Military-First" policy under Kim Jong-il, this brass piece is one of several stadium-themed commemoratives the Central Bank produced in the early 2000s — a period when the DPRK used coin programs almost entirely as hard-currency earners through foreign collector markets rather than for domestic circulation. The 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, completed in 1989, holds a Guinness-recognized capacity of 114,000 and serves as the venue for the Arirang mass games.
