North Korea's first independent currency series, issued in 1947, replaced the Soviet occupation-era yen-based instruments that had been circulating since 1945. The Central Bank of the DPRK was established specifically to administer this transition — Moscow had been running the northern zone's finances through the Soviet Civil Administration, and Pyongyang needed its own monetary apparatus before the formal proclamation of the state in 1948.
The series was printed in the Soviet Union, which supplied the technical infrastructure for the young state's earliest banknote production. Surviving examples in any grade are genuinely uncommon; the 1959 currency reform, which replaced old won at a ten-to-one rate, triggered a near-total withdrawal and destruction of the 1947 series.
